RACE method for answering questions

RACE - The structure I have the students use to answer questions.

I just wanted to share with you the structure we use to answer questions related to the text.

It is a RACE car image and stands for Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite evidence, Explain how your evidence supports your answer.  In class I remind them all the time to "use RACE".

I've included some images of RACE.  There are two bookmarks that the students have taped on their desk as well as our small reading group table, and they should have a copy in their homework folder.

I encourage them to use this as they write opinion and informative explanatory writing pieces and when explaining their answer or work in math.  You'll note that sometimes I might write RACE on their literacy work and wanted you all to be aware of what that means.

**Also, keep in mind RACE won't work for some questions and that's okay.  It just doesn't work.

Here is an example.  Just to give parents and students an idea.  We don't necessarily use this paper to help them answer questions.  The paragraph at the very bottom is what it could all look like when all parts are put together.
